Dutch patriot tells us to 'wake up'

Shinedo has been releasing powerful techno productions to the public for two decades, but the ever-growing Dutch scene and stars like Dave Clark , Jeff Mills , Rekids and Physikal are becoming more and more aware of his talent. He has now released his fifth album, Freedom Riders , on his music-driven label (MTM) (digital only), as well as a four-track Wake Up EP on vinyl for DJs to enjoy. We caught up with him to find out more…

Have you ever recovered from a dance event in Amsterdam? Now it seems like a real world phenomenon. what did you do? Where have you played and seen other great bands?

ADE was great this year. I ended the evening with Dave Clark at the Melkweg on Friday night. Also, I did an audio tour for Everything Music x ADE where people can download the app (https://everythingismusic.io/) and hear my voice guiding them to my favorite places in Amsterdam. There are many things to do during ADE. This year I met my friends and relaxed because I traveled to Colombia for a few days.

The Netherlands has always had a place for techno, but the Dutch techno scene is particularly strong right now. What do you think the features are and are there any new names you can suggest?

The Dutch techno scene has always been strong in both clubs and festivals. In my opinion, all forms of techno music are always visible. It might be a bit more 'commercial' now, which might explain why people think it might be a bit louder now, as well as the younger generations embracing techno music. I'm always still finding new names, but the scene is very dynamic.

Your hit single "Dilemma" was released on the Dutch label 100% Pure in 2004. How do you think your music has changed since then?

It's what I always feel or see when I make music. Each song has its own feeling that I try to convey. I'm always interested in using new gadgets or plugins. I always learn more when I have something new in my studio, or when I have a technical problem and I have to sit for hours to solve it.

Tell us about the MTM label you started in 2018. Why ignore Intact and just focus on releasing your own creations?

I have successfully run Intact Records with Dylan Hermelin for 16 years (2000 and one) and in that time we have released music from many world artists. I have learned a lot and am very grateful over the years.

At some point I felt and noticed that it takes a lot of time and effort to find the right music for our label. When the shutdown started I had time to think and felt that I wanted to focus on my work and continue my moving music .

Your voice is often called a "positive" voice. Is it something you actively work on or does it happen on its own? Should we be careful not to overdo it?

It's fun! Producing for me means being free and creative. I don't label my voice or what my music sounds like. I create what I feel in the moment and express it in my work. What I love about music is that everyone has their own experience and interpretation when listening to music, so my compositions can represent something different to each listener.

Last year you released an album on Jeff Mills' Axis label; How is Jeff doing as a label head?

Jeff Mills is honest, direct, yet always compassionate and fully engaged.

The "Wake Up" EP gave us a glimpse of what's on the Freedom Riders album as well as what we're about to hear. How would you describe the LP?

My Awakening EP focuses on being aware of your surroundings and connecting with your inner truth. Once you have peace within, you will feel smart and this is where you will find freedom. Freedom Riders is about breaking free from the conditions of this world and returning to your pure nature. I hope the EP leads you to the LP in the same way.
