Infinix Zero 5G 2023 Review: Premium, Sometimes!

Infinix Zero 5G 2023 Review: Premium, Sometimes!

The Infinix Zero 5G 2023 is an updated version of the 2022 variant of the same name with a new design that looks very premium.

This time the device has two variants; The one we tested is called the Turbo Edition and comes with a Dimensity 1080 processor and up to 256GB of memory. The regular version of the Infinix Zero 5G 2023 has a Dimensity 920 processor and 128 GB of storage.

infinix zero 5g 2023 review

We have been using this device for over two weeks and will share our detailed thoughts about it. Let's begin.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Design and Build Quality

Infinix Zero 5G 2023 has a beautiful design on the back. Infinix has used vegan leather to give the phone a durable yet soft finish that feels good in the hand. We added Coral Orange which looks great against the bright orange side bezel. There are two other colors namely Pearl White and Submarine Black. The gold branding of the phone is also etched on the back.

There is a smooth transition between the back and the camera bump, which gives the device a sleek design. The frame is plastic, but it doesn't look cheap. The front has a 6.7-inch screen with subtle bezels and a hole for the front camera.

On the right side of the frame is a volume button (quite tactile) and a power button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor (quite fast and responsive). On the left side of the bezel is the SIM card slot which can hold two 5G SIM cards as well as a microSD card. At the bottom of the case is a USB Type-C port (USB 2.0, unfortunately), a main speaker, a main microphone and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On top of the phone is an additional noise-canceling microphone and a few dots.

Overall, we like the design and feel of the Infinix Zero 5G 2023. The phone is heavy but light enough (199g) to use with one hand. The back feels so comfortable that we used the phone without a case during testing. But yes, people with small hands will have a hard time with this phone and you get a box in the box if you need it.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Looks and Sounds

display of infinix zero5g 2023

The Infinix Zero 5G features a large 6.7-inch FullHD+ IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is clear and the color reproduction is accurate. The 120Hz refresh rate works well most of the time, but we left it on Auto for better performance and battery life. You can always force 120Hz if you want.

Although the screen is an LCD panel, the bezels around the screen are quite thin. There is a slight glow around the edges and around the top-center front camera, but it doesn't affect the usability of the screen. All content looks great on screen and most OTT platforms support Widevine L1. Overall, the Infinix Zero 5G 2023's display offers a very good experience.

In terms of audio, the Infinix Zero 5G 2023 has a speaker at the bottom which doesn't sound very good. It lacks depth and sounds tinny even at maximum volume. The 3.5mm headphone jack provides good audio output as it supports high-resolution audio with the DTS audio enhancement feature available in the software. Audio output via Bluetooth also sounds great. Also, you can use the Type-C port or DAC dongle to use your favorite headphones.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Performance and Battery Life

peformance of infinix zero 5g 2023

Infinix Zero 5G 2023 comes in two flavors, regular variant with Dimension 920 processor and Turbo version with Dimension 1080 processor. We use the Turbo version, so our opinion is based on that.

The Dimensity 1080 processor is definitely a powerful chip in this price range. The Infinix Zero 5G 2023 handles daily tasks well and supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz without much hassle. There are occasional stutters in the UI, mostly due to poor optimization, but things like scrolling and opening and closing apps are pretty quick and smooth.

Even with resource-intensive tasks like games, the phone doesn't heat up. The Dimensity 1080 chipset with 8GB LPDDRX RAM helps the phone maintain performance during long workloads. Infinix Zero uses UFS 2.2 storage on 5G, although newer storage options will offer more speed. Our device has 256 GB of storage, which is more than enough for most people and quite unusual for a mid-range smartphone in the same price range.

While performance is good, the software still lacks optimization, causing the phone to occasionally drop a few frames and animations that aren't as smooth as they could be. As powerful as the Dimension 1080 is, if the software isn't properly optimized, there will always be performance issues.

Call quality was solid and there were no issues with the device's proximity sensor. Cellular and Wi-Fi network performance is also good. Unfortunately 5G does not work on JIO SIM, even though the option is enabled in settings. Finally, the haptic feedback isn't great; We closed it on the first day.

battery stats for infinix zero 5g 2023

In terms of battery life, the Infinix Zero 5G 2023 is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. During our testing, the device ran a full 17-hour workday without any issues. We were easily able to get over 7 hours of screen time on each charge with 30-40% battery left at the end of the day. One of the biggest plus points of the Infinix Zero 5G is the battery life.

In terms of charging speed, the Infinix Zero 5G 2023 supports fast charging up to 33W and comes with a 33W charger. The phone will charge from 10% to 100% in about 1 hour 40 minutes. It's not the fastest charging speed we've seen from a smartphone in the same price range, but it's by no means slow.

Overall, Infinix Zero 5G 2023 performs well and lasts all day.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Software and Features

software on infinix zero 5g

Infinix Zero 5G runs on XOS V12 based on Android 12 The software is smooth, responsive and full of features There is some malware behind the first log, but you can remove most of it. After the initial setup, we didn't see any ads in the user interface. Infinix seems to have taken inspiration from MIUI in terms of UI elements and how they work. Quick settings panel and notification center are very similar to MIUI components

You need to swipe from the top right of the screen to access quick settings and swipe from the top left to access the notification center. This gesture can be difficult with one hand because the phone is so large. However, there is an option in the home screen settings that allows you to swipe anywhere on the home screen to open the notification panel and swipe left to access quick settings from there.

Otherwise, XOS behaves like stock Android: swiping from the bottom reveals the app drawer, and swiping right reveals a blank screen replacing the Google Now page. There are little things like pressing and holding a gesture to bring up a side menu for quick access to certain features. There are also swipe gestures for taking screenshots and similar tasks.

features on infinix zero 5g 2023

Inifnix Zero 5G has its own caller ID and call recording option that doesn't notify the recipient before the recording starts. There are things like X-Mode and GeekBar that provide some extra features for gamers. You have a virtual RAM option that uses the memory as additional RAM, but it's not as efficient.

As far as updates go, a new 2023 phone with Android 12 is a bad sign. Also, the December 2022 security patch is currently rolling out, and Infinix has promised software updates for two years. Their track record with previous updates isn't great, so I was skeptical. Overall, the software is not bad.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Camera

camera on the infinix zero 5g 2023

The Infinix Zero 5G has three cameras, but only one camera is actually usable. It has a 50 MP main sensor, a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth camera. The main camera captures images with good detail, but Infinix still needs to work on HDR processing and white balance control. 4K video at 30 FPS also looks good, but not great. The other two cameras are useless to say the least. There is a dual LED flash for photos and videos at night.

Camera works well in good light but useless in low light. Artificial lighting conditions also have a slight effect on camera performance. There's a 16-megapixel front-facing camera that takes detailed selfies, but softens faces and brightens them every time, even if you turn off all beautification settings. Surprisingly, the front camera also has a dual LED flash, which will help you take better selfies at night.

Infinix Zero 5G 2023: Conclusion

The Inifnix Zero 5G 2023 is a good device for most people as it offers a very premium design with good performance and a good camera. Infinix should work on the software and provide timely updates to customers. We don't know when 5G will be available on this device, but hopefully soon.
