Samsung has been developing foldable devices for four years. Make the phone bigger and more compact in form factor. But the company still hasn't figured out how to design a foldable screen that won't distract you when swiping or in certain lighting conditions. It's been that way for nearly half a century, because the South Korean phone maker lacked the outside force—healthy competition in the global market—to keep it going. Enter Find Oppo N2 Flip!
Oppo's foldable phone addresses three of the Galaxy Z Flip 4's biggest pain points: wrinkles, a large screen, and all-day battery life. I've been waiting for these three improvements from a Samsung smartphone since the Galaxy Z Flip 3. And they were supposed to be part of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
Drop hinge design is the way to go
The Oppo Find N2 Flip has a waterdrop design that allows it to lie flat when folded, unlike the Galaxy Z Flip line, which always has a gap in the middle. The slot allows any pocket debris to scratch the smooth foldable screen inside, which is not the case with the Find N2 Flip. I would still prefer some sort of IP rating.
Oppo says its Find N2 Flip has been tested to 400,000 folds, which is a solid number. The hinge is not only a design element, but a feature of the FlexForm software. This allows me to open the phone 90 degrees for video calls, selfies and watching YouTube videos. I've used it as a selfie stick more times than I care to remember, as I did with the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
The hinge is strong and can be opened with one hand just like the Flip 4. The best part is the minimal notch that you won't see on the screen unless you're looking. It's much less noticeable than the Flip 4's crease. The hinge alone makes the Find N2 Flip's hardware superior to its Samsung counterpart.
It looks great on the surface, yes! But...
The Oppo Find N2 Flip comes with a 3.26-inch screen protector. The best use cases I've found for the viewfinder are when taking selfies with the 50MP main camera or the wide-angle rear camera. It reminded me of the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro, which had a flip-up camera system that allowed me to take selfies with the main camera. This is also possible on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. But the small screen doesn't make it intuitive.
But the screen protector of Oppo phone is not used much. All you can do is interact with some widgets. I get a lot of emails and it annoys me that I can't answer without opening my phone. Having built-in widgets optimized for screen size is nice, but it's terrible. Motorola Razr has the most comfortable screen ever.
As Michael Fisher aka MrMobile points out in his review, Oppo could have made the external display more functional, as the smallest Android phone he reviewed has a smaller main screen than the Find N2 Flip. Despite its size, all apps ran on a screen of that size, so the Oppo Find N2 was able to offer more features on the flip skin.
Lasts all day without any issues
My biggest issue with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the battery life - it was absolutely terrible. The Flip 4 improves on this, but it hardly makes it an all-day smartphone.
Conversely, the Find N2 Flip easily lasts all day. I don't have to run for my charger as soon as I get home. I can easily scroll through Twitter. It charges at 44W when I need it, not the fastest, but still fast, offering 50% battery in 25 minutes of charging.
Find N2 Flip is powered by MediaTek Dimension 9000+ chipset. It does leave me longing for more horses. I love ColorOS and it works perfectly in daily life. The screen is bright and crisp, allowing me to enjoy live 120Hz content on the 6.8-inch screen.
In terms of optics, the main camera delivers excellent results when shooting in bright light. It focuses quickly in portrait mode and offers good edge detection, but not the best. Low light photos look better than average. I used XPan mode to explore the landscape of Costa Brava, Spain. The ultra-wide-angle sensor captures average shots and can be used.
The Oppo Find N2 Flip Launch is a triumph of sheer form factor.
The Oppo Find N2 Flip forces Samsung, the world's largest foldable smartphone retailer, to step up its game. It's not perfect, but it paves the way for a more competitive market. It's a win for the flip phone factor.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 was supposed to offer minimal notch and all-day battery life with an improved hinge design and larger screen coverage. But that didn't happen, and this is where the Find N2 Flip shines. 849 pounds / 1199 euros / 89,999 INR, I would prefer the Oppo Find N2 Flip over the Galaxy Z Flip 4 due to its better hardware and battery life.
