Up until a few years ago, phones supported a maximum charging speed of 25-50W. That was until Chinese smartphone makers tried to release phones with faster charging. Soon, 100W fast charging became commonplace in phones, even in mid-range offerings. Thanks to the OnePlus 11, you can enjoy such blistering speeds in the US too. But if you think 100W is fast, think again. Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand has introduced 300W charging support for their smartphones.

The Redmi demo comes a few weeks after Realme unveiled the GT Neo 5 with ridiculous 240W fast charging support.

In a post on Weibo, Redmi presented the Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition with a 4100mAh battery and a charging power of 300W. The phone reached a maximum power of 290W with an average power consumption of 280W for about 2 minutes. The standard Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition packs a 4300mAh battery and supports 210W fast charging.

The modified battery of Redmi Note 12 takes only 82 seconds to charge to 50% and 4 minutes and 54 seconds to fully charge. In comparison, Realme says that the GT Neo 5 can be charged from 0-100% in under 10 minutes with 240W fast charging. Interestingly, the USB-C power delivery standard itself is designed for a maximum output of 240 watts.

Xiaomi uses dual GaN technology to control the size of the 300W power supply. It is equipped with "over 50 security measures". In order for the battery to be able to handle so much power in such a short time, the company uses stronger 15C cells. Special carbon parts are used instead of graphite for the electrodes, which contributes to a reduction of up to 35%.

Xiaomi claims to use a new "sandwich" design for the battery to better dissipate heat and make better use of internal space. The company has not provided any further information about the latest charging technology and the timing of its debut on the smartphone.
