Some popular electronic musicians who are supporters of NFT join forces and take inspiration from the profiles of CryptoPunks ( PFP ) .
Steve Aoki and Justin "3LAU" Blau announced today via Ethereum NFTs that they have formed a supergroup and will be releasing new music called Punx. Although both are experienced producers with their own sound signatures, 3LAU announced on Twitter that they plan to collaborate with Punx to create a new style of electronic music.
While Punx uses artist NFTs , CryptoPunks will not issue their own NFTs for this project, at least not initially. Previously, the pair released their first single together, " Jenny ", under the name NFT in 2021 .
"It's not an NFT," 3LAU told Punx. "But that doesn't mean there won't be a time in the future where our music and blockchain technology are intertwined."
In a statement, Aoki, who said earlier this year that he made more money from NFTs than a decade of record company success, said their shared passion for Web3 inspired his longtime friend to create Punx.
"Punx is a modern musical art concept project that pays homage to the music we love and the music that has shaped who we are today," said Aoki. "Using CryptoPunks in the images is just the beginning of how we plan to involve the amazing Web3 community in this project."
Since the announcement on Tuesday morning, Aoki has changed his Twitter profile picture to CryptoPunk #6748 , so this could be the PFP that Aoki will use as his avatar and alter ego in the duo. An avid NFT collector bought Punk #6748 wearing purple pants and a thief's eye mask in September for 89.95 ETH or $147,000 .
3LAU's CryptoPunk is Punk #6708 with white hair and black sunglasses . 3LAU bought the NFT in March 2021 for 29.99 ETH or about $51,000 at the time.
"For the past few years, we've been traveling together in the crazy world of Web3," 3LAU, who co-founded music marketplace NFT Royal, said in a statement about his friendship with Aoki . "We can't wait to share the new sound and all the crazy ideas we have in the studio with the world."
Yuga hopes to preserve its "legacy as a work of art" as CryptoPunks NFT holders gain commercial rights.
CryptoPunks owners can use images from their NFTs to create artwork and merchandise, subject to an intellectual property grant from project owner Yuga Labs. The company first popularized the concept in 2021 with the launch of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.
Other artists used their NFT avatars to release music, usually through NFT's Bored Ape Yacht Club. Following today's announcement, 3LAU explained to Decrypt why he and Aoki chose to use CryptoPunks for this collaboration.
"Compared to the number of Ape projects released, not much has been done with punk," 3LAU said. “And that's how Steve got into this space in the first place. I told him all this at the end of 2020, so the punks made sense."
As for Bored Ape, EscapePlan is a two-speaker DJ duo from the NFT project . Earlier this year, they announced a partnership with artist Dillon Francis to co-create the music, inspiring Francis to acquire Bored Monkey as part of a live deal.
