Detroit Icon Amp Fiddler Dies After Cancer Battle, Hailed By Peers

An announcement on the Detroit musician's Instagram page said he had died after a long and honorable battle with cancer and was a "world-renowned funk, soul and electronic music ambassador, keyboard player, producer, Afrofuturist, guiding light for many."

Joseph "Amp" Fiedler has died at the age of 65, prompting many tributes from other musicians.

According to Rolling Stone, an announcement on the popular and respected Detroit musician's Instagram page said he had died "after a long and good battle with cancer."

The statement describes Vidler as "Detroit's master of funk, soul and electronic music, keyboardist, producer, Afrofuturist and ambassador of light to many."

"The weight of his energy, his global influence and his contribution cannot be overstated," the statement continued. "His life's work, his legacy, and most of all, his love far exceeded his earthly existence. How lucky we are to have Amp Fiddler in this life."

A major contributor to funk, soul, hip-hop and dance music, Fiddler rose to fame as a session musician and collaborator during his time with Parliament and Funkadelic. He directed Jay Dylan, adapted the Akai MPC drum machine and introduced future hip-hop icons Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest.

"Rest in peace brother Amber," musician and record producer Questlove said on Instagram. "For all the talks on the Pfunk tour. For all the music. Especially for mentoring someone who obviously helped us (Dilla) - thanks bro."

According to Rolling Stone, he has worked with Fiddler Prince, Sly & Robbie, Carl Craig, Muddyman and Maxwell.

Vidler started his solo career in the 2000s. The following year, the violinist released his first album, Waltz of a Ghetto Fly.

In 2006, Fiddler released his second album, Afro Strut, and in 2008 he collaborated with Jamaican rhythm section/production duo Sly & Robbie on the album Inspiration Information.

Production of Fiddler continued in 2010 and 2020. He has released several solo albums and collaborated with Detroit musician Will Sessions. In the year 2021, he collected songs from his Basementality series on a CD, and in June he collaborated with Luke Solomon on a new song called Come.

In a 2017 interview with the Red Bull Music Academy, Fiddler praised his career as being "part of Detroit music in so many ways" and described what makes the city and its historic musical creativity so special.

"We're a community of musicians who all love and respect each other and love what we do," Vidler said, according to Rolling Stone. "I think what creates love and what makes music successful is that we don't worry about how much we have to pay (each other) to play something, so it's always, 'I want this.' "This is for me." "And it's going to be amazing. Experience is the reward for that, and music is the reward for that."

Fiedler's family is accepting donations for funeral expenses through a pre-set GoFundMe page to help pay his medical bills and help him recover from surgery and a lengthy hospital stay in 2022.
