Musician and former Bay Area resident Luis Vasquez, the main creative force behind the post-punk/dark wave project Soft Moon, died Friday morning in Los Angeles at the age of 44, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner.
The news was announced early Friday morning in a post on Soft Moon's official social media pages. The cause of death was not mentioned in the court session.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear friend Luis Vasquez. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family, friends and extended musical family," Soft Moon said in a statement on its Facebook page. We ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time... Their loss is great and our hearts are broken."
Vasquez's death was linked to two other deaths at a private residence, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner. The other two men were identified in court as John "Juan" Mendes, 46, also a popular techno DJ from Los Angeles who recorded under the name Silent Servant, whose death was reportedly confirmed by his management, and Simon Ling. , 43, Mendez's partner. The coroner did not confirm the cause of death.
Soft Moon was formed by Vasquez while living in the Bay Area and playing with the popular local neo-psych band the Lumerians. Soft Moon was a home recording project that grew into a popular post-punk/dark channel project. Originally intended for just Vasquez and a few friends, the music of the multi-instrumentalist known as Soft Moon reached a global audience with the hypnotic, dark sounds of his 2010 debut, creating a fan base that grew with each follow-up. let him go
