OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Should You Buy It?
OPPO Find X7 Ultra

OPPO has proven once again that it has what it takes to create one of the best smartphone device lines and continues to take mobile photography to the next level. Finding the X7 Ultra makes us want to go back to the best from OPPO in the western market. If you want a great phone that works out of the box, we don't recommend getting one, but if you can get past the network compatibility issues and find software workarounds for the rest, you won't be disappointed.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra review:

  • what's at first glance? The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is the latest flagship phone in the Find OPPO series. Despite the success of Find 2023
  • Where can you buy it? OPPO Find X7 Ultra is available in China. You can import the phone, but OPPO has no plans to officially bring the phone to the Western market.
  • What is the price OPPO charges at 5,999 yuan (~$834) for the base Find X7 Ultra model. You can get the phone from some retailers for around $1,000.
  • How did we test it? I tested the OPPO Find X7 Ultra for six days. The review unit was provided by OPPO.
  • Is it worth it? OPPO has created one of the best camera phones with the Find X7 Ultra. The display, charging capacity and unique design are equally attractive, making this a great flagship phone that should be on everyone's radar. Without an official Western distribution channel and a Chinese version of Color OS, we unfortunately cannot recommend the phone to a global audience.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra: the best camera phone?

I was very impressed with the camera quality and versatility of the OPPO Find X6 Pro. Unfortunately, the phone's availability was very limited, but its photographic capabilities made it a worthy import for serious mobile photographers. OPPO Find X7 Ultra almost builds on the successful formula by introducing a 6x periscope zoom camera. That's another 50MP sensor — four in total — albeit a smaller 1/2.51-inch sensor. The 2.8x zoom features a large 1/1.56-inch sensor and a narrower aperture of just f/4.3 compared to other phone lenses. Putting a long-range zoom lens on a phone is certainly a challenge, but despite OPPO's claim of a "quad primary camera", I don't expect the secondary periscope camera to be as good as the other three cameras.

However, its long-range performance is very much on par with the best in the industry, and OPPO claims its four high-quality cameras offer versatility you won't find anywhere else, especially in terms of pinpoint accuracy. of focus and less reliance on digital zoom. . . Let's talk about some examples. I took the popular Google Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to see how the phones stack up against each other.

As with the Find X6 Pro, color, detail, exposure and white balance are very good on the four rear lenses. The phone works well in low light even without night mode. But I might be pedantic: contrast and saturation can be a bit high in some scenes, HDR isn't as strong as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and the Periscope 6x's dynamic range isn't as good as the other three lenses in the lighting challenge. But none of this will ruin your photos.

My biggest criticism is the degree of chromatic aberration in bright daylight, which is a symptom of pushing these apertures too far. Likewise, ultra-wide lenses have some distortion at the edges, again showing that they are beyond the limits of such a small lens. However, given the lens you're shooting with, you'll rarely get a bad photo, and that can't be said for most other smartphone cameras I've used.

I like to zoom when I shoot and spend a lot of time between four lenses. I never had to worry about zooming to the wrong level and getting a poor quality image. In fact, this year I felt more confident pushing the phone further with the new Periscope 6x camera.

I've found the new second periscope lens to be very useful at 10x and even slightly larger, so it keeps up with the distance competition. But you'll also benefit from a 65mm lens for macro and portrait photography, something you won't get from the better Google and Samsung. Even if you're not a fan of the Hasselblad camera's image processing (I've moved on to a more recent, less saturated app), the consistency of the various lenses makes this line of cameras stand out.

Speaking of which, the Find X7 Ultra is good in portraits, even if the selfie camera's ultra-wide field of view distorts the shape of faces a bit.

of this This This This This This is a little softer than the competitors, in the main use of the selfie camera, you will always find nice lighting and exposure, small details, but very clear skin texture and monotone color ring. Combined with the natural bokeh of the 2.8x zoom lens and 65mm focal length, the Find X7 Ultra's photos are worthy of a mirrorless shot. Especially compared to the very reliable Pixel 8 Pro or the very fast Galaxy S24 Ultra. It's miles ahead of the washed-up face of the iPhone. If you love taking pictures of friends and family, the Find X7 Ultra is an all-around winner.

Although the quest for perfection may never end, OPPO has achieved it like no other with the Find X7 Ultra. Without a doubt, this phone has the most durable and versatile camera package on the market. Combined with 4K60 recording capabilities on all lenses, powerful video stabilization and 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR, the Find X7 Ultra should be on the radar of every mobile photographer and videographer and raise the bar for flagship camera phones.

Should you buy the OPPO Find X7 Ultra?

As great as the OPPO Find X7 Ultra's camera is, it takes more to make a great smartphone, and this flagship is no exception. Expect familiar OPPO features such as a brilliant AMOLED display with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, a premium vegan leather cover on the back, 100W SuperVOOC fast wired charging and 50W wireless fast charging, an IP68 rating and operating fast Gnapendragon 8

. The hardware is top notch and the phone is pretty good. The faux leather finish is beautiful and OPPO has made the Himegas camera body stylish. This is a very nice smartphone.

However, we have reservations about the implementation on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone. First, we couldn't install Play Store test apps on our review unit, and the fake APKs we installed scored low on GeekBench 6 and PCMark 3.0, unless the phone had it installed. In high performance mode. To make matters worse, our graphical stress test resulted in the device displaying overheating messages and draining a significant amount of battery. However, I had no problem running apps and games on the phone, but our results suggest that the Find X7 Ultra may struggle to keep up with more demanding users in the long run.

The Chinese version of Color OS 14 (Android 14) is equally disappointing. I finally went through Baidu and its fancy keyboard to install the Play Store and my familiar suite of apps, but it was frustrating. Even with a lot of work, you cannot remove all programs and services that are not useful for a Western audience. Beware of potential importers. Flaws aside, Color OS 14 is a fully usable version of Android 14 with plenty of customization options and pretty solid battery management.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra offers great hardware that we would like to see more of in the market.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra turns things upside down in the battery and charging department. The 5,000 mAh battery is enough to power users through the day, but our tests show that the Find X7 Ultra doesn't have the longest battery life of ultraphones. Battery drain is a particular concern when running our gaming benchmarks, but that's likely due to running the GPU at full capacity, which most games don't. However, killing the aggressive background tasks in Color OS above may leave you with little benefit on day two. When you need to charge, the phone can draw 85 watts from the wall to charge it in just 30 minutes. Overall

, though, the lack of customization and software warranty makes it impossible to recommend the OPPO Find. Hopefully, OPPO's recent deal with Nokia will bring its flagship smartphones to the West Coast in the near future.
