Oppo Find N2 Flip: We Go HandsOn With The New Foldable's Huge Cover Screen

The Oppo Find N2 Flip is here. The Chinese company launched the Flip phone at its global launch on Wednesday. Oppo's clamshell phone looks heavily inspired by the boxy design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, but with a distinctly different glass cover.

Unlike the Z Flip 4, the Find N2 Flip's cover display is vertically oriented and larger at 3.26 inches with a resolution of 720 x 382 pixels. By comparison, the Z Flip 4 has an external screen of 1.9 inches with a resolution of 260 x 512 pixels; Last year's Motorola Razr had a 2.7-inch curved screen with a resolution of 573x800 pixels. In fact, Find N2 Flip has the largest fixed coverage screen of any flip phone.

Screen aside, Find N2 Flip has all the features you'd expect from a foldable phone in 2023. It has two rear cameras, one with a 50-megapixel sensor, a 32-megapixel front camera, a powerful processor (MediaTek) Dimensity 9000 Plus) and a 4300 mAh battery that can be charged up to 44 watts. No IP rating for resistance to water or dust. By comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has an IPX8 rating, which means it's resistant to water, but not dust. Currently, there is no flip phone designed to withstand dust.

The Find N2 Flip is available to pre-order in the UK from today starting at £849, or around $1,020 and AU$1,480. While there are currently no plans for a US release, the phone is said to be appearing in select stores in Europe and Asia.

The Find N2 Flip case is great.

It is commendable that Oppo dares to shake the cover design in mobile phones. While not quite as nice as the Galaxy Z Flip 4's horizontal display, I think the Find N2 Flip's cover display has the potential to have more features. Best of all, it has the largest vertical ring display of any foldable phone.

In the few hours I spent with the phone, I found the Find N2 Flip's cover display useful for quickly checking the weather without opening the phone. All you had to do was swipe left, and the title screen displayed the widgets you selected, including camera, timer, weather, and recorder. I could get notifications about it, but I couldn't see my plans. I hope Oppo adds a Google Calendar widget to the cover photo.

Navigation is easy. Swipe down on the home screen to see the dashboard, swipe up to see the notification list, and swipe left to see various widgets.

The camera widget lets you use the cover screen as a viewfinder, meaning you can take selfies, portraits and videos without opening your phone. Thanks to the large screen size, you can get a good idea of how the photo will look when you take it.

Quick responses, also available on the Z Flip 4, is another useful feature of this device. Whenever you received a WhatsApp message, you could easily reply by choosing the cover image from the many predefined templates. I was also able to create my own message template. In addition to WhatsApp, the quick reply feature is available on Slack, Messenger, Telegram and Line. Just like the Galaxy Z Flip 4, this phone doesn't allow you to type or tap a reply without unlocking the phone. You are limited by the model.

However, as it stands, the Find N2 Flip's flip screen has limited functionality compared to the Motorola Razr . In 2020, the second generation Razr gets a full keyboard for typing and the ability to identify apps (like Gmail and YouTube) that fit on the title screen, and you can play games like PUBG Mobile. I wish the Find N2 Flip's cover display offers that kind of freedom and utility, but if Oppo can pull off the software part, there's definitely potential.

The Find N2 Flip has a 50-megapixel camera.

This phone has two cameras on the back: a 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The Find N2 Flip doesn't have a telephoto lens, so don't expect it to take sharp photos of distant subjects. There is currently no foldable phone with a dedicated telephoto lens. I took some pictures. Images tend to look blurry when viewed digitally at 5x zoom. To be honest, you might not buy this phone for its zoom capabilities. I found the photos I took with the Oppo to be beautiful. Check out some examples below.

The internal display of the Find N2 Flip has a slight ring.

The internal screen of the Find N2 Flip is in the form of a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel. At first glance, you might not see the fold on the screen. It can sometimes be seen if you hold it at certain angles or in bright light. I also hear it from time to time while scrolling or typing on the screen. For the most part, though, the crease didn't mar my experience, and it wasn't a deal breaker by any means. Otherwise, the screen looks sharp, responsive and quite bright in sunny conditions.

The main screen has a 120Hz refresh rate, making it easy to navigate apps and scroll through the news. This year, Oppo updated the Fold, which the company says is smaller and thinner, but stronger than before. According to the company, the Find N2 Flip has been tested around 400,000 times. According to Oppo, the screen has an ultra-thin glass layer that improves its durability.
