Realme GT 5 Pro Uses A Surprising Body Part To Unlock The Phone. No, Not That One

If you want to unlock your phone, there are usually two options. Some phones have facial recognition that allows you to hold your face in front of the selfie camera to unlock the device. and others have fingerprint lock, which achieves the same results by pressing a finger on the sensor. The location of the sensors varies from company to company, but unless you're Realme, the basic idea remains the same.

With the Realme GT5 Pro, Realme has created an alternative to facial and fingerprint recognition systems: palm recognition. And that leaves us with the big question: Why?

Palm recognition is exactly what you think. Instead of recognizing your fingerprint or face, the GT5 Pro can recognize your palm print. This is done via the front selfie camera, but with your hand instead of your head.

X has a video demonstration that appears to work as described. So why use it?

The most obvious advantage of fingerprint recognition is also the least important here: it's more hygienic since you don't physically touch the phone. But since you've unlocked your phone for use, meaning you're physically touching it, that doesn't matter.

The second benefit is the same as facial recognition: you can unlock your phone when your hands are busy or when you're cooking or doing something mechanical where your fingers are covered with objects you don't want to move. your phone

The third advantage is that the camera used for palm recognition can also be used for gesture recognition, which is what Realme does: the GT5 Pro can switch between apps and take screenshots hands-free.

But the main purpose of palm recognition is, of course, security. A palm scan may be more secure than a fingerprint scan, but it is a different type of scan than the one shown here. Palm vein detection is available and works very well, but it is also very expensive compared to other methods. The variant used here is hand geometry recognition, which is much cheaper, much faster and unfortunately also less secure than fingerprint recognition.

The Realme GT5 Pro is currently only available in China, but is expected to arrive in Europe early next year. If you see one, shake it.
